Spring Harvest 2007

Bronze Arrow, Emerald Oak, Butterking, and Red IcebergHarvest home grown lettuce as "cut and come again". As you harvest the larger leaves, new leaves will keep growing, for a continued harvest. Remember to pick early in the morning when its at its sweetest. (Later in the day, the lettuce will shoot up a bitter mucus through its leaves, as protection from predators.)

Look who's hanging around as I pick some lettuce.

I've grown "cut and come again" lettuce before, but I didn't know about harvesting in the morning.
Thanks for the tip!

Hi Anna Maria - you can see it, its kind of a white, milky substance. If you harvest late in the day, see if you notice it where you make the cut, it will ooze out. I never notice this when I pick early in the day.

Yes, thanks for the lettuce harvesting tip.... I've always picked it right before dinner and do notice the milky stuff, but never associated it with the bitterness.
