First Rain

I can't remember the last time it rained. It always amazes me.
Our rainy/cool season requires little attention in the garden. It basicly can maintain itself. Hopefully I can continue picking lettuce for my salads, and enjoy looking out at some cool season flowers from the window.

Cover Crops

Cereal Rye

These seeds were directly broadcast into this bed on September 24, and starting germinating on September 28. I will have to do a lot of thinnng out, as they should be grown on 5" centers, as most grains.

Black Emmer Wheat

These seeds were started in this flat on September 24, and are now ready to be transplanted into a larger flat with more room.

Fava Beans

These seeds were sown directly into this bed on August 28th, then thinned on 8" centers.

Seed Storing for next year

I am storing my seeds that I saved on a shelf in my dining room, where the temperature is the most consistent and no direct sun light will hit them. In the years past, I have just forgotten about them, and left them outdoors in their paper bags, still hanging and thankfully protected from direct rain.....and they survived and germinated. But I decided to get organized.

After they are completely dry, you can put them in a mason jar or an envelope. Just be sure to label, with name and date.

The last of my seed saving this season, Uncle Tom's Black-Eye Susans.

Volunteer Greens in my Yard

Arugula, Curly Frisse and Dandelion Greens If you let one of these go to seed, you should never have to plant again.

They make a great salad. Pick early in the morning for the best flavor.

Mayonaise, Honey and Lime dressing

Whisk together about a Tablespoon of each for a fresh tasting dressing. Great with greens, dried cranberries, walnuts and gorgonzola cheese.
