PVC Bed Hoops
Easy and inexpensive project. I need them to keep the chickens out with bird netting attached, and also to extend the season with reemay cloth attached during the cool season.
You can either cut the pvc pipe to the height you desire, or just push them deeper in the soil to the desired height. Mine are 1/2" x 10'.
In some beds, a 1/2" bracket was placed inside to secure the pvc pipe in place.
In this bed, a lag bolt is holding the pvc pipe in place. They are 5/16" x 3 1/2" long. It is attached to the top of the sides of the raised beds.
Notice the nails are slanted upside-down, really no need for that large nail head to keep netting secure, and much easier to remove without getting tangled on the head.

I have just read your blog from march to may leaving a trail of comments.I love your ingenuity and the fact your garden has beauty within the raised beds, like a work of Art.Uncle Toms method seems to have inspired your green fingers. You seem passionate about growing things, and the beauty of the plant/flower/taste.Keep on blogging!
Glad you enjoyed it snappy. I love to see photos of other gardens, and share photos of my own. When I take a garden class, one my favorite things is when they include a field trip to see someone else's garden!
At first it seemed tricky, but I got used to it quick, and their is nothing to it. We placed nails with big heads about every foot to hold the netting. With the chicks, I don't really have a choice, especially with all my lettuce, it wouldn't last 10 minutes without the netting. Give one bed a try and see what you think. I did order my netting in bulk through amazon.com, so I got a huge roll.
Thank you for posting these pics! A very helpful tutorial, indeed.
Can you tell me what size PVC pipe you use?
When I first laid out my beds I intended to do something similar but never got around to it and now I've got the urge again. I did throw together a cold frame out of black pvc water line and some plastic tarp that I think works pretty well as a temporary thing.
hi jeanne.
i stumbled upon your blog when i did a search for nasturtium, which i have decided to try growing this year. i check back with your blog daily to see anything new you've posted. i love the idea of uncle toms method and wanted to let you know that i am trying the method and it is working better than i imagined. i live in michigan, and started the seed growing a little late but it is so much fun to watch little ones grow from seed. since the days can still be a little cold (and thus my house) i have placed them on wet papertowels, and folded them up and placed them in ziploc baggies. then i placed them in my car, where it is warm and gets diffused light. i started them 2 days ago, and i checked them, and after 2 full days, the flowers have already germinated!
my question is do i want to add air to the baggies (i do worry about them rotting), is the car too hot (the degrees isn't super hot in the car right now), and is there anythin else i am forgetting?
anyhow, i wanted to thank you for the gardening advice, and hopefully, tom's memory will live on in michigan too.
Nasturtium is a great choice for beginner garders. They are really easy to germinate, and will become a weed in your garden, and you can also collect some seeds to sow in other areas. But I still always seem to pick up a packet at the nursery each year, because they always seem to have a new color. I prefer the mounding type, verses the trailing, unless they are going verticle up a trellis. I use them as a border in my raised beds. They attract beneficial insects and are great companions for tomatoes. They seem to be able to tolerate some cold, they are always one of the first flowers to germinate in the spring in my yard, actually I probably have a few that survive all winter. I never tried the car, and good for you for experimenting with that! That's what its all about. I just usually leave the baggies (unzipped), on my dining room table, and they do great. Have fun.
Andrew - my husband thinks it would be easier to take the netting on and off with a nail with NO head, so he is going around now, clipping off all the heads. Makes sense to me, nothing to get tangled on when your in a rush.
Claire - the pvc is 1/2". We got it in 10' lengths(cost about $1.50).
Andrew - pvc is so useful (and cheap) in the garden. I used to make a little hot house around my peppers and covered it with plastic. It really increased production.
Oops...........I meant Steven...........this is a very popular topic!
what is best wood to make raised bed with or are you better getting pvc plastic beds.bit expensive plastic ones though.i think i will just use wooden ones just now.

Thisking tours hoop bed cover is very functional and is tough enough to support most of the coverings you would need to wrap around it. It basically takes the concept of a tent and applies it to your garden beds. It's the perfect solution for raised beds because it can fit inside the raised bed's edges for added support. When the cold weather's safely past, it can be disassembled for easy storage.

enough to make the proper amount of hoop anchors per bed. This will depend on the dimensions of your bed. My new raised beds are 8 feet long, so I wanted 4 hoops. This allows enough support so the coverings, netting, plastic sheeting, or row cover, would not sag unduly. This meant hoop anchors every 32 inches on each of the two long sides, or 8 anchors per bed.

Please be mindful of the use of PVC- its manufacture creates dioxin in our environment. In Canada especially, First People have dioxin in water due to PVC manufacturing.
Please be mindful in the use of toxic and energy hog (plastic) materials.
